Russell Wilson: 7th Annual VIZIO Top Value Performer

We are excited to announce that fans across the country have voted Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson as the 2013 VIZIO Top Value Performer! For the seventh consecutive year, the VIZIO Top Value Performer award sought to recognize the professional football player whose on-field performance most exceeded expectations and the value of their annual base salary.

After winning the Seattle starting job in 2012, Wilson was named last year’s Rookie of the Year and was voted by the fans as the 2012 VIZIO Top Value Performer, making him the only repeat nominee and a back-to-back winner. With another outstanding season, Wilson led his team to a division title and conference championship and will be staring down Denver in February’s big game.  Wilson completed 257 passes for 3,357 yards during the regular season with a total of 26 touchdowns, stats that helped make him the most winning second-year quarterback.

Congratulations to Russell and thanks to all of the fans who voted!

Good for VIZIO Customers and Good for the Environment

Blog By: Ken Lowe, Vice President and Co-Founder of VIZIO

For the 2013 model year all VIZIO LCD televisions use LED backlights.

The old method of creating the light was by CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp) tubes.  These are similar in operation to the fluorescent tube lamps that are commonplace in stores and offices and like these lamps each CCFL contains a small amount of mercury.  Because of this, care has to be taken when recycling these older LCD TVs because the CCFLs have to be removed unbroken to be disposed of separately ensuring the mercury is recovered.

Another important factor for using LED is that they consume less electricity so that the total power taken by the LCD LED HDTV is significantly less than previous ones.  The average power taken by one of our 32” Class size LCE LED HDTVs is about the same as a 25W incandescent light bulb.  This not only means that it costs less in electricity for our Customers to use their television, it means less demand for electricity and hopefully removing the need to build another power station.

A big bonus with using an LED Backlight is that it also helps improve the quality of the picture, allowing us to use techniques such as local dimming.  It has always been difficult to produce black with LCD panels.  It can seem weird to talk about producing nothing (no light) but when there is still light shining behind the LCD panel it is an enormous task to prevent all of the light from getting through.  With local dimming we are able to reduce the amount of light being emitted by LEDS in areas where the video is dark so the picture is dark, improving the overall picture quality.
